Cooking at Nursery

Cooking and baking provide a wealth of learning opportunities for children. Developing knowledge of the different ingredients that go into baking cakes and tasty dishes, through to trips to the supermarket to identify and buy different foods, and finally pulling it all together to make a variety of yummy snacks and treats!

Early math’s skills are put into practice by counting and weighing the different ingredients. Mathematical vocabulary can be introduced, ‘more or less’, ‘heavier or lighter’. Gross motor and hand-eye coordination skills are developed with actions such as pouring, scooping, and mixing. Through chopping fruit and vegetables children start to develop important muscles and tool control.

Whether it’s baking cakes for one of our charity sales, or trying new healthy foods, our children love to get involved in cooking activities at nursery!
